Chihuahua 1913 (part 2): The Olmec

While looking into the history of Mexico, leading up to the birth of Elder MJ’s mother, we found a delightful rabbit hold: The Olmec. This civilization flourished around 1500-400 BCE in what is now southeastern Mexico. Although the Olmec thrived near what is now Veracruz, 1,750km from Chihuahua, they played an important role in the development of Mesoamerica.

At their peak, the Olmec’s largest urban area, San Lorenzo, had a population of about 10,000 in 1500 BC.

The Olmecs are recognized as one of the earliest advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica, flourishing in the tropical lowlands along Mexico’s southeastern Gulf coast between approximately 1500 and 300 BCE. Often referred to as the “Rubber People,” a name derived from the Nahuatl language, they were significant for their development of complex agricultural practices and permanent settlements. The Olmec heartland featured major centers like San Lorenzo and La Venta, which served as political and religious hubs with impressive monumental architecture, including colossal stone heads and pyramids.

Skilled in stone and jade carving, the Olmecs created remarkable art and established extensive trade networks that influenced surrounding cultures. Their society included social stratification, with an elite class that oversaw agricultural production and monumental building projects. Additionally, the Olmecs contributed to Mesoamerican cultural developments, including an early form of writing, religious practices involving shamanism, and the origins of the Mesoamerican ball game. Despite their decline around 300 BCE, the Olmec culture laid foundational elements that would resonate through subsequent civilizations such as the Maya and Zapotec.

An Olmec farmer around 1000 BCE would have been working in a hot, wet Gulf Coast environment, probably with a digging stick and stone tools, growing maize, beans, squash, palms. Imagine the mosquitoes!

This article refers to the Mayans, but a milpa system was developed earlier by the Olmec farmers.

La Milpa: A superior ecological technology
But the Mayans did not limit themselves to domesticating corn. They developed an entire agricultural and ecological system around it, known as the milpa. In stark contrast to the destructive monocultures of modern industrial agriculture, the cornfield is a complex and sustainable ecosystem.

In the center of the cornfield are “the three sisters”:

  1. The corn: It provides a tall, strong stem that serves as support.
  2. The bean: It is a climbing plant that gets tangled in the corn stalk. Crucially, the bean is a legume that fixes nitrogen from the air into the soil, fertilizing the soil naturally.
  3. The pumpkin: It is planted at ground level. Its large, wide leaves provide shade to the soil, maintaining humidity, regulating soil temperature and preventing weeds from growing.

Together, the three sisters not only form an agricultural ecosystem that regenerates soil rather than depletes it, but also provide a nutritionally complete diet. Corn is rich in carbohydrates, but lacks certain essential amino acids (such as niacin and tryptophan). Beans provide precisely those missing amino acids, as well as protein. Pumpkin provides vitamins and healthy fats in its seeds.

Chocolate

Cacao has carried deep cultural meaning since it was first domesticated. For the Olmec, an early Mexican Gulf Coast culture (1500 to 400 BC), this plant had geological, nutritional, spiritual, and economic significance. As the first society known to have domesticated the cacao tree, the Olmec found the crop to be spiritually and culturally significant in addition to being a healthful and delicious foodstuff. Theobromine (a chemical compound present in cacao) found in excavated Olmec pottery and at ancient burial sites revealed that cacao beverages were a staple in a variety of spiritual ceremonies (Powis 2011).

The cacao story goes much further back:

The oldest convincing evidence currently known comes from the Santa Ana-La Florida site in southeastern Ecuador, associated with the Mayo-Chinchipe culture. Researchers found cacao starch grains, theobromine residues, and ancient cacao DNA in vessels dating to roughly 3500–3300 BCE, about 5,300 years ago. That is roughly two millennia before the classic Olmec florescence.

Olmec Rubber: Sports and Shoes

The Olmec manufactured rubber by combining the milky sap of the native rubber tree with the acidic juice of a morning glory vine, discovering a chemical stabilization process over 3,000 years before Western vulcanization.

  • Latex Harvesting: Workers tapped the Panama rubber tree (Castilla elastica), scoring the bark to gather its raw, white latex sap. On its own, raw latex dries into a brittle, gummy solid that degrades quickly in tropical heat.
  • Coagulating Agent: Harvesters crushed and juiced the stems and leaves of the morning glory vine (Ipomoea alba, often called the moonflower), which grows symbiotically around the rubber trees.
  • Chemical Transformation: The morning glory juice acted as a natural coagulant. Its acidic compounds neutralized the electrostatic charges keeping the latex polymer chains suspended in water, forcing the polymers to cross-link into long, flexible elastomeric networks.
  • Heating and Shaping: The blend was gently heated and stirred until a spongy curd separated from the remaining liquid. While still warm and pliable, workers kneaded the mass into shape, layering and pressing strips together to form dense balls, sandals, tool bindings, and waterproof sealants.

Archaeological analysis from MIT demonstrates that Mesoamerican rubber makers even adjusted their ratios to tune mechanical properties: a roughly 50:50 ratio of latex to morning glory juice produced high-rebound balls for the sacred ballgame, while a 3:1 ratio yielded tougher, wear-resistant soles for footwear.

The Olmec pioneered the famous Mesoamerican ballgame, an athletic and deeply ritualized sport that was later inherited and adapted by the Maya, Zapotec, and Aztecs.

Because the Olmec left no written rulebooks, what is known about their version comes from archaeological discoveries, figurines, colossal head iconography, and the survival of descendant versions like modern-day ulama.

The Equipment and Gear

  • The Ball: Players used a heavy, dense ball of solid rubber, typically weighing between 6 and 9 pounds (roughly 3 to 4 kg). The earliest preserved examples—dating to around 1600 BCE—were discovered submerged in the freshwater bog at the Olmec sacred site of El Manatí.
  • Helmets and Headgear: The famous Olmec Colossal Heads are widely believed by archaeologists to portray rulers dressed in protective ballgame gear, most notably padded leather or wicker helmets designed to shield the skull from stray, heavy balls.
  • Body Armor: Because taking a direct hit from a 9-pound solid rubber ball could break bones or rupture internal organs, players wore protective hip wraps and thick girdles (called yokes), as well as knee pads and forearm guards.

How It Was Played

  • Hip-Volleying: While later cultures had stick or racket variations, the classic version required players to keep the ball aloft without using their hands or feet. Athletes used their hips, buttocks, and upper thighs to launch the ball across the court.
  • The Courts: Unlike the famous stone courts with high vertical rings built millennia later by the Maya, the earliest Olmec courts were open, earthen alleys flanked by sloping mounds.
  • Scoring: The stone hoop was a much later Mesoamerican invention. In the Olmec era, the objective was point-based—similar to volleyball or racquetball—where teams scored by forcing the opposing side to miss a return, allow the ball to bounce more than once, or drive it past boundary markers.

Sacred and Political Meaning The game was far more than an athletic contest; it held immense cosmological significance. The movement of the bouncing black ball mirrored the journey of celestial bodies—specifically the sun and moon—across the underworld and the heavens. It served as a symbolic staging ground for political diplomacy, territorial dispute settlement, and fertility rituals.

Colossal Heads

The Olmec’s most famous artifacts are the colossal heads, known officially as Colossal Heads.

There are 17 known Colossal Heads. The basalt bolders range in weight from 5 to 45 tons, and were transported over 90 miles from the mountains of Veracruz.

All of the heads are realistic, unidealised and frank depictions of the men. It is likely that they were portraits of living (or recently deceased) rulers well known to the sculptors. Each head is distinct and naturalistic, displaying individualised features. They were once thought to represent ballplayers although this theory is no longer widely held; it is possible, however, that they represent rulers equipped for the Mesoamerican ballgame. Facial expressions depicted on the heads vary from stern through placid to smiling.

Manufacture
The production of each colossal head must have been carefully planned, given the effort required to ensure the necessary resources were available; it seems likely that only the more powerful Olmec rulers were able to mobilise such resources. The workforce would have included sculptors, labourers, overseers, boatmen, woodworkers and other artisans producing the tools to make and move the monument, in addition to the support needed to feed and otherwise attend to these workers. The seasonal and agricultural cycles and river levels needed to have been taken into account to plan the production of the monument and the whole project may well have taken years from beginning to end.

The boulders were transported over 150 kilometres (93 mi) from the source of the stone. The exact method of transport of such large masses of rock are unknown, especially since the Olmecs lacked beasts of burden and functional wheels, and they were likely to have used water transport whenever possible.

The headdress of on Colossal Heads may have represented the helmets worn by players of the Mesoamerican ball game.

Elder G provided a detailed engineering analysis of the raft design, buoyancy requirements, materials, etc. The analysis is available for a nominal fee for WLBOTT Elders interested in constructing their own Colossal Head transportation system.

The Olmec may have build the raft on the shore, then excavated the earth underneath to float the raft. This makes sense, since they they could load and position the boulder on a solid footing.

Tesla meets Olmec

That striking art installation is a piece titled Neo Ta Memes (often called Tesla Crushed by an Olmec Head) created by Mexican sculptor Chavis Mármol.

Unveiled in March 2024 in the trendy Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City (right outside the Colima 71 hotel), the installation features a massive, 9-ton hand-carved quarry stone replica of an ancient Olmec colossal head resting squarely on the crushed roof of a blue Tesla Model 3.

The project carries several layers of meaning and intent:

  • Trolling Tech and Capitalism: Mármol has openly stated that the piece was designed to “troll” Elon Musk. By dropping a piece of ancient indigenous history onto a modern symbol of ultra-capitalism and high-tech excess, he wanted to juxtapose the two. In his words, the ancient stone head “imposes itself before the technological object, it bursts and crushes it,” reducing a prized product of the capitalist system to something fleeting and transient.
  • Honoring Roots: The artist wanted to emphasize that deep cultural roots, history, and generations of heritage matter far more than modern material obsessions and billionaire-driven technology.
  • The “Neo-Ta-Memes” Series: The installation is the final part of a broader artistic series by Mármol. The title references tamemes—the pre-Hispanic indigenous porters who carried heavy loads on their backs before pack animals were introduced. Other pieces in the series included strapping a mini Olmec head onto a food-delivery bicycle backpack and replacing a Mr. Potato Head face with a stone carving.
  • Viral Mystery: Before the installation was fully documented and explained, photos of the crushed blue Tesla quietly circulating on social media sparked a massive online frenzy. Theories ranged from a bizarre marketing stunt to a bizarre weather event, or even alien intervention, before Mármol revealed it as a deliberate performance-art piece.

The hand-carved replica weighs approximately 9 metric tons (around 19,800 lbs or just under 10 US short tons). It was carved from quarry stone by Mármol and a collaborative team over the course of roughly six months.

How It Was Transported and Dropped

Transporting and maneuvering an object of that scale required heavy industrial equipment and careful coordination:

Flatbed Hauling: The stone head was brought to the installation site on Calle Colima in Roma Norte (on a lot coordinated with Colima 71 Casa de Arte Hotel.

  • Industrial Cranes: On March 5, 2024, heavy industrial crane rigs were brought in to hoist the 9-ton head above the car.
  • The Controlled “Drop”: Riggers strapped the sculpture with high-capacity lifting slings, hoisted it directly over the donor-provided blue Tesla Model 3, and lowered/released it onto the roof until the chassis and pillars crumpled under the massive weight.
  • Safety Precautions: Before lowering the head, the crew completely removed the Tesla’s lithium-ion battery pack and powertrain components to avoid a catastrophic puncture fire or chemical hazard when the vehicle structure caved in.

In November 2008, LLILAS celebrated the arrival of a special work of art on campus. The Universidad Veracruzana, one of Mexico’s most prominent universities, presented the institute with a colossal Olmec head, a replica of the iconic sculpture known as San Lorenzo Monument 1, or El Rey.

The original, now housed in the Museo de Antropología in Xalapa, Veracruz, is considered a signature piece of pre-Columbian Olmec culture and a world-class art object that represents New World civilization as emblematically as the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacán or the ruins of Machu Picchu. One of seventeen colossal heads still in existence, San Lorenzo Monument 1 was found by noted archaeologist Matthew Stirling in the 1940s. His discoveries, and those of other archaeologists in Mexico during this time, unearthed for the world the culture of the Olmec, an ancient civilization that flourished in southern Mexico 1500-400 BCE and significantly influenced later cultures such as the Maya and Aztec.

The replica that now sits at the entry to LLILAS and the Benson Latin American Collection is made of solid stone and weighs 36,000 pounds. It was sculpted by Ignacio Pérez Solano, a Xalapa-based artist, who has spent his career exploring the history of the Gulf Coast and Mesoamerica. Pérez Solano meticulously reproduced San Lorenzo Monument 1 inch by inch, recreating the powerful lines and imposing features of the original work.

Ah, but the law of unintended consequences! Bev’s office is located directly above the Ladle & Lub, and the beams in the old barn are starting to give way under the weight of the colossal head. Sister Magdalena looked up from her tranquil morning cup of coco (with her favorite chicken in her lap) to see part of the Colossal Head poking through!
