Our Weavers

Now let us turn our attention to the hardworking Peruvian kelp weavers that make all this possible. Wearing their native dress, these hard working women sit in front of large ocean-side looms, turning baskets of kelp into embroidered finery.

Kelp Weaving / Women Mind the Water

Turns out that kelp weaving is actually a thing! It is mainly used in making baskets.

You can read the transcript of a podcast featuring Cheryl Massey, a Canadian basket maker.

From Women Mind the Water…

Cheryl talks about how she collects and uses kelp to make baskets. She relies on the wind and sun to dry the kelp that she collects during the spring and summer months along the rocky beaches of British Columbia. She says that as it dries the kelp takes on its own personality. Before working with the kelp, Cheryl soaks it in warm water in order to make it pliable so she can work with it.

Women Mind the Water

Wo(men) Mind the Water Artivist Series podcasts feature inspirational individuals who share their passion for the ocean. They are artivists (artists and activists, in other words creative people) who discuss their connection with the ocean and their ocean-inspired art.

Women are influenced by the tides that flow within them. This is why Wo(men) Mind the Water explores the connection between women and water using storytelling. Our brand of storytelling conveys both a passion for the ocean and the artful way women express this.
