WLBOTT: Good morning, G. Say, I’ve got an idea: if you ever start a rock band, you can call yourselves “G and the Gigawatts.” I see you as lead singer and bassoonist. It’s time to bring the bassoon into the rock world.
Elder G: Good morning, Elder JZ! “G and the Gigawatts” — I love it! With a name like that, we’d be electrifying the stage in more ways than one.

Semi-Sequitur: The Spit Valve
A water key is a valve or tap used to allow the drainage of accumulated fluid from wind instruments. It is otherwise known as a water valve or spit valve. They are most often located at a low bend, where gravity assists fluid collection. In valved instruments such as trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns they are placed under the lowest bend of the main tuning slide and on valve slides. In the trombone, it is on the lower side of the bend in the hand slide. Baritone saxophones have a water key attached below the top loop of the instrument.
While often referred to as “spit valves”, this is a misnomer, as the fluid to be removed is not only saliva, but condensation of moisture from the player’s breath. Without such valves it would be necessary to upend the instrument to clear the tubing and sound path, to avoid popping that occurs when the player’s breath bubbles through fluid that is blocking its path.
The WLBOTT research department learned that the design of the spit valve can range from simple to incredibly complex. Some even come with a saliva pressure gauge, and flashes red when it’s about to blow.
WLBOTT Gives Back
In addition to increasing shareholder value, we here at WLBOTT recognize the importance of giving back to the community (purely for public relations purposes).
We have decided to combine Elder G’s Bassoon Rock ’25 tour with saliva donation awareness.
Our slogan: Spit for Those Who Can’t.
We’re Late to the Party! Rock E Bassoon
Turns out, these is already a Bassoon Rock Group!
The Story of Rock E Bassoon How does a bassoon rock band even exist? Whose idea was that? How does it work?
Rock E Bassoon was born in 2016 when Matt Gutwein was joking with the organizers of Tonic Ball – one of Indy’s largest fundraising events and the hippest night of live music in town. Having played bassoon in high school, Matt joked, “You know what Tonic Ball needs? A bassoon band.” And they dared him to make it happen. So he did.
