On the TV was the Wimbledon Men&#8217;s Final. Recovering from the exhausting demands of my <strong>WLBOTT<\/strong> managerial duties, I had neither the will nor the energy to reach for the remote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/mqex7qun1xmu783eucuen\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-13-2026-04_38_41-AM.jpg?rlkey=1ikxdvj9wwl3l6ti0egw5vixh&amp;st=usqmc0h0&amp;raw=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/mqex7qun1xmu783eucuen\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-13-2026-04_38_41-AM.jpg?rlkey=1ikxdvj9wwl3l6ti0egw5vixh&amp;st=usqmc0h0&amp;raw=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this led me to think: what sports would not be possible without modern material science?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ping Pong<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earliest table tennis balls in the late 1800s were made from <strong>celluloid<\/strong>, which was one of the first plastics. Before that, people experimented with cork, rubber, and even rounded champagne corks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celluloid was revolutionary because it was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">hard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">very uniform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">wonderfully bouncy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also had one unfortunate feature: It was <em>alarmingly flammable.<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Elder G<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As a youth, I have fond memories of hanging out in the concrete culvert behind our military housing and lighting cracked ping pong balls on fire, and man, did they burn. We also experimented with the flammability of those little green army men, but they needed a bit of lighter fluid. It wasn\u2019t until 1901, that James Gibb, an Englishman, discovered celluloid balls in the United States and found them \u201cperfect for the play of ping-pong.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name of the sport is attributed to the sound the ball makes when it is hit back and forth on the table. They produce a wide array of equipment, including elite-level Hurricane rubbers, tables, and ITTF-approved ABS balls used in world-class tournaments. <em>&#8211; Gemini<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a surprising amount of manual labor involved in making ping pong balls. Here a young woman is testing the veer of the balls. If they roll out of their lane, they are disqualified. We noticed that there was a lot of trophy-smooching going on. The Wimbledon trophies are lightly seasoned with victory, perspiration, and the faint metallic aftertaste of seventeen years of childhood tennis lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT: <\/strong>What was the Viking word for &#8220;ping pong&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elder G:<\/strong><strong>P\u01ebngr.<\/strong> Historians remain divided on whether it meant &#8220;ping pong&#8221; or &#8220;duck before Olaf serves the walnut.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT: <\/strong>Has Wimbledon ever been played with ping pong balls?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elder G:<\/strong> Only once. The match ended after 17 hours because nobody could find the ball in the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT: <\/strong>Ping pong on the moon would be pretty cool. What do you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elder G:<\/strong> Every rally would end with someone saying, &#8220;I&#8217;ll get it,&#8221; followed by a thoughtful 2.5-second silence as the ball drifted serenely into lunar orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perch at Wimbledon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our newest employee, <strong>Perch Periwinkle<\/strong> (of the La Mesa <strong>Periwinkles<\/strong>) is actually quite a tennis player, and she represented us at Wimbledon in the Women&#8217;s Singles. She came in second, and was awarded a lovely trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She immediately takes the trophy platter and dashes up into the stands. Everyone thinks she is going to visit her <strong>WLBOTT<\/strong> supporters (who have a reserved section in the stands). Instead, Perch heads to the concession stand, and orders all their remaining nachos (with the gooey orange cheese). She has the concession attendant place the nachos on her trophy platter.
