{"id":67309,"date":"2026-07-11T04:45:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T09:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wlbott.com\/?p=67309"},"modified":"2026-07-11T07:09:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T12:09:27","slug":"elder-jimzims-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wlbott.com\/?p=67309","title":{"rendered":"Elder JimZim&#8217;s Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT Corporate HQ<\/strong> received the following email from <strong>Elder JimZim<\/strong> this afternoon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gentle People<\/strong> &#8211; I am in Northeast MA, just outside of Boston. &nbsp;When not shuttling various members of the Metropolitan Flute Orchestra around, I have been exploring the small towns and countryside. &nbsp;This local&nbsp;area is steeped in history &#8211; Lexington and Concord, Walden Pond, and birthplace of the PDP minicomputer at DEC just a few miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You would then not fault me for being skeptical of a road sign saying \u201cWelcome to Legendary Leominster\u201d. &nbsp;I must say, the town looked like any run down mill town in this part of the country. &nbsp;<strong>BUT<\/strong>, some research showed the Chamber&nbsp;of Commerce was&nbsp;honest in their assertion &#8211; Leominster is legendary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed, was born there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">given strong Shaker influences, the town was an&nbsp;Abolitionist stronghold and an important stop on the Underground Railroad for escaped slaves fleeing to Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And&nbsp;most importantly, Leominster knew the road to riches was \u201cPlastic\u201d, well before the movie, The Graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town was the largest supplier of hair&nbsp;combs in early America. &nbsp;Things really took off with the invention of celluloid in the mid-1800\u2019s. &nbsp;This material&nbsp;allowed the manufacture of combs (with their fine teeth) out of a molded man-made&nbsp;material rather than antlers and hooves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acceptance and innovation around moldable&nbsp;materials fostered a plastics mindset in Leominster. &nbsp;A local inventor molded eyeglass frames from early plastics and started&nbsp;the famous sunglass company, Foster&nbsp;Grant. &nbsp;When injection molding was invented around WW2, Tupperware was born in Leominster. &nbsp;Most importantly, plastic&nbsp;lawn flamingos migrated&nbsp;all over the US&nbsp;in the 1950\u2019s from this humble hamlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I was an artist, I would create a visual of Johnny Appleseed wearing sunglasses and sporting finely coiffed hair with a comb sticking out of his pocket. &nbsp;He would be driving a wagon with&nbsp;a lawn flamingos guarding the apple seeds stored in Tupperware. &nbsp;Just an idea\u2026.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge Accepted!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We called an &#8220;All Hands On Deck<sup>[1]<\/sup>&#8221; to the <strong>WLBOTT <\/strong>staff of graphic artists. It quickly goes off the rails, doesn&#8217;t seem to follow any rules, yet often ignites the flames of non-sequitur creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we decided to hire a new web artist that had the same spirit of <s>loony<\/s> outside-the-box creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet <strong>Perch Parenthetical<\/strong> <strong>Periwinkle<\/strong>! Perch is from the La Mesa (Tx) Periwinkles. The family has never owned a ruler, a television, or social security numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/dx9n3zu5hxapehz2bucrm\/46ba6c24-15b8-4be2-8952-a7e8768f0121.jpg?rlkey=qhtkriod2ugjjypb18a0g15sq&amp;st=6ois8ud2&amp;raw=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/dx9n3zu5hxapehz2bucrm\/46ba6c24-15b8-4be2-8952-a7e8768f0121.jpg?rlkey=qhtkriod2ugjjypb18a0g15sq&amp;st=6ois8ud2&amp;raw=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Employee Orientation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three months after <strong>Perch&#8217;s <\/strong>new employee orientation with <strong>Bev<\/strong>, our HR manager, both <strong>Perch <\/strong>and <strong>Bev <\/strong>both used the same phrase to describe the meeting: &#8220;<em>A trip and a half<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/09a29r6fl5esbvx8ah375\/c167ded2-1e5a-413f-be08-1bd58b105ff8.jpg?rlkey=vqknqxwmsgs7d0trma20033dd&amp;st=3u3ormfw&amp;raw=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/09a29r6fl5esbvx8ah375\/c167ded2-1e5a-413f-be08-1bd58b105ff8.jpg?rlkey=vqknqxwmsgs7d0trma20033dd&amp;st=3u3ormfw&amp;raw=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally the new employee orientation lasts about 30 minutes, and focuses on how to work the coffee pot, how to find the bathrooms, and our rotating chicken coop mucking schedule (new hires move to the top of the list). But Perch&#8217;s orientation lasted over <strong>EIGHT HOURS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The orientation began at 8:00 sharp. Upon arriving, Perch&#8217;s first question to Bev was, &#8220;Who are we here? And is this A.M. or P.M.?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the close of the orientation, <strong>Bev<\/strong> had added three inches to <strong>Perch&#8217;s <\/strong>file (including two official write-ups), and <strong>Perch <\/strong>had completed four masterful crayon drawings and pitched seven new BLOTT ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perch <\/strong>was issued a standard <strong>WLBOTT <\/strong>ID badge. Within the first 24 hours, she had used the badge to scoop guacamole, scrape the ice off her windshield (in Austin? in July?) and clean her kitty litter box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/igr3ouzql724utsfhdxw0\/0b777537-d56b-4d40-80be-48f02534e790.jpg?rlkey=rcyergvj6kqcsdad55eer6dl8&amp;st=hduiocno&amp;raw=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/igr3ouzql724utsfhdxw0\/0b777537-d56b-4d40-80be-48f02534e790.jpg?rlkey=rcyergvj6kqcsdad55eer6dl8&amp;st=hduiocno&amp;raw=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perch&#8217;s <\/strong>first assignment was to deconstruct <strong>Elder JimZim&#8217;s<\/strong> challenge and come up with something fresh.
