I write to you from the edge of my sanity\u2014and the edge of our cornfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Mabel H., and I am the wife of a third-generation corn farmer here in northwest Iowa. My husband, Virgil, is a man of few words but many routines. Every summer, like clockwork, he begins what he solemnly calls his \u201cdetasseling pilgrimage.\u201d He rises before dawn, grabs his canvas bag, his water jug, and a wide-brimmed hat, and sets off into the fields.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He claims it is vital work<\/em>, something about \u201cpreventing the wrong corn from touching the other corn,\u201d and I respect that. I do. But Tess, we have seventeen children<\/strong>, and I am the only one here keeping the pigs from eating the laundry.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Lately, Virgil\u2019s detasseling trips have grown\u2026 longer. He\u2019s been gone from sun-up to moonset. He insists it\u2019s all part of the hybrid process. Yet I recently found a postcard in his pocket\u2014from a Corn Queen Festival in Kansas<\/em>, with a suspicious lipstick smudge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not one to jump to conclusions, Tess. But I\u2019ve heard whispers from the other women in town\u2014rumors of \u201ctassel clubs\u201d and \u201ccorn whisperers\u201d who detassel with unseemly flair. One even claimed she saw Virgil at the Casey\u2019s General Store in denim overalls that were pressed.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Is detasseling truly a noble calling, or is my Virgil sowing wild oats disguised as seed corn?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, detasseling is a real job. A noble one, even. But as a former therapist for chickens and current columnist for the lovelorn, I\u2019ve seen this pattern before. A man says he’s going to
tend the fields,<\/em> and suddenly he\u2019s driving 67 miles to \u201cresearch pollen flow dynamics\u201d in a county with a very generous selection of pie stands and unattached agronomy majors.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pressed overalls? Postcards with rouge? Unless Virgil has developed a deeply personal relationship with a Corn Queen commemorative stamp, I think we can safely say something smells… off. And it\u2019s not just the fertilizer.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Here\u2019s my advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Call a Field Meeting.<\/strong>
    Invite Virgil to sit down\u2014perhaps with a glass of lemonade and a firm tone\u2014and ask him to walk you through exactly what he’s been detasseling\u2026 and with whom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Request a Tassel Accounting.<\/strong>
    Ask for a list of dates, fields, and varietals. If he stammers and brings up the Dust Bowl, he\u2019s dodging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Consider Counter-Intelligence.<\/strong>
    Send one of the older kids (maybe the one who can\u2019t be trusted near power tools) out to follow him discreetly. Bonus if they carry a clipboard and mutter things like \u201cYield deviation noted.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Remember Your Worth.<\/strong>
    You are not just the silent partner in this farm-based marriage. You are the glue, the grease, and probably the one who fixes the tractor. Don\u2019t let yourself be reduced to background corn.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If it turns out Virgil has been faithful, just deeply passionate about pollen purity, then celebrate with sweet corn and forgiveness. But if he\u2019s been wandering from your row, I suggest you replant your boundaries\u2014and maybe consider a solo vacation to a place where the only tassels are on cocktail umbrellas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
