{"id":41491,"date":"2024-12-12T10:48:19","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T16:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wlbott.com\/?p=41491"},"modified":"2024-12-12T10:57:48","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T16:57:48","slug":"wlbott-and-a-breath-of-fresh-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wlbott.com\/?p=41491","title":{"rendered":"WLBOTT and a Breath of Fresh Air"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For several decades I&#8217;ve had this fantasy<sup>[1]<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">become wealthy in a socially acceptable and non-exploitative way<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">contact <strong>Terry Gross<\/strong>, of NPR \/ Fresh Air notoriety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">agree to donate $1,000,000 to a mutually agreed upon charity if&#8230;.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">she can produce a one hour <strong>Fresh Air<\/strong> episode where she makes me, the world&#8217;s dullest guy, seem even moderately interesting.<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>[1]<\/sup> <strong>Elder G:<\/strong> UC#4, are you sure you understand the concept of &#8220;fantasy?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>[2]<\/sup> Admittedly a daunting challenge. Since joining NPR in 1975, Gross has interviewed thousands of guests.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terry_Gross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> \/ Photo By BillCramer &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-small-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1975, she moved to WHYY-FM in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to host and produce Fresh Air, which was a local interview program at the time. In 1985, Fresh Air with Terry Gross went national, being distributed weekly by NPR. It became a daily program two years later. Gross typically conducts the interviews from the WHYY-FM studios in Philadelphia, with her subject at the studio of a local NPR affiliate convenient to them connected via telephone or satellite feed. For the majority of these conversations, Gross is not face-to-face with her subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Interview style<\/strong><br>The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that Gross&#8217;s interviews are &#8220;a remarkable blend of empathy, warmth, genuine curiosity, and sharp intelligence.&#8221; Gross prides herself on preparation; prior to interviewing guests, she reads their books, watches their movies, or listens to their CDs.<sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terry_Gross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>[3]<\/sup> She may draw the line at reading the <strong>WLBOTT<\/strong> blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Stumped Elder G!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT:<\/strong> Hey, Elder G. Let&#8217;s play a game. What do these people have in common? Bill O&#8217;Reilly, Lou Reed, Jann Wenner, Peter Boyle, Faye Dunaway, Monica Lewinsky, and Adam Driver<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elder G:<\/strong> Is there a New Jersey connection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-small-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Difficult interviews<\/strong><br>There have been some occasions when interviews have not gone smoothly. Gross asked Nancy Reagan about the lack of funding and mishandling of HIV\/AIDS by her husband, President Ronald Reagan, which was not well received. Several guests, including Lou Reed, Jann Wenner, Faye Dunaway, Peter Boyle, Monica Lewinsky, Bill O&#8217;Reilly, and Adam Driver, have stopped their interviews prematurely.<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terry_Gross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably Gross&#8217; most problematic interview was with the KISS idiot Gene Simmons. Terry Gross has a way of pulling out fascinating angles from her guests. If she did interview you, what do you think she\u2019d focus on\u2014your WLBOTT escapades, your imaginative storytelling, or perhaps your philosophical musings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WLBOTT:<\/strong> I&#8217;m a little disappointed that you didn&#8217;t say, &#8220;No, UC#4. Like she once asked the magician Ricky Jay something like \u201cIs there ever a trick where the behind-the-scenes stuff \u2013 the secret stuff we don\u2019t see \u2013 is actually more interesting than what we DO see?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inventing a question like that is such a pure imaginative act of empathy.
