A diaspora <\/strong>(sometimes voluntary, sometimes forced) is the dispersion of people from their original homeland. It is differentiated from migration. A diaspora can occur do to a climate or ecological crisis, famine, natural disasters, or by the tyranny of a colonizing power (such as slavery, or as seen in the current Russian invasion of Ukraine). Diasporas are often filled with suffering, heartbreak, pain, and loss, but can lead to hope, community (hromada<\/strong>), and a shared identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etymology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term “diaspora” is derived from the Greek verb \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9 (diaspeir\u014d), “I scatter”<\/strong><\/em>, “I spread about” which in turn is composed of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac (dia), “between, through, across” and the verb \u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9 (speir\u014d), “I sow, I scatter”. The term \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03ac (diaspora) hence meant “scattering”.<\/p>\nWikipedia<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
