Here’s a “night in the life of an elder” story:

It’s 4 AM and I am up for my two-hourly hobble around the house a few times to work the cramps out of the new knee. As I pass by the stairs that lead to the command centre, I can hear a faint, high-pitched tone. A quick check confirms that the sound is coming from the basement.

What could it be? The old CO detector? The new CO detector that came with the new furnace? My new Radon Gas detector telling me we have only a few minutes to live? Should I go down the steps and check it out or will I be like the family in India trying to rescue a chicken from the bottom of the well?

No better idea, so down the steps, one at a time, cane in hand. Into the man-cave and the noise is louder. Not the NAS failing again. Radon detector not emitting anything. Computer is shut down. Ah-ha! Must be the UPS.

What could be more fun than trying to maneuver a 20 Lb battery charger that is screaming at me into a position where I can shut off the damn alarm? Finally got everything disconnected and re-connected to various power bars. Computer is booting up. Wrestled the UPS onto the workbench. Fortunately, the battery just pops out. Ordered a new one from Amazon, should be here is a week or so.

All’s quite on the Northern front, back to bed.

UC#1

[ed. note: to tell you the truth, all I really heard was “family in India trying to rescue a chicken from the bottom of the well”]

Mangaluru, May 7: A boy rescued a hen from a well on Saturday, May 7 at an undisclosed location here. It looks like a brave act. But the boy had to do it risking his life. Sadly he saved the hen after his family asked him to do so.

As per details gathered, a hen fell into a well in disuse. Nearby residents gathered in minutes after they heard about the incident. This boy was coaxed by his family and others to help rescue the fowl. The boy succeeded in the mission of bringing the hen from the well. Someone made a video of the act and circulated in WhatsApp. The 2.22 minutes video which went viral has attracted widespread criticism.

As per the video clip, the boy is made to sit in a bucket and a rope is tied to him and the bucket. The bucket is then let down into the well. The boy came out of the bucket, caught hold of the fowl and sat back in the bucket. Then the bucket was pulled out of the well.

It is not possible from the video to find out the location of the place where the incident took place. But the people in the video speak Tulu and it looks like a city location.

People in social media have opined that the family played with the boy’s life to save a hen.

I was able to find a video clip of the boy rescuing the chicken (but unable to embed).

WLBOTT Wonders: What was the ultimate fate of the rescued chicken?

The original video was not on YouTube, but YouTube search results for “Mangaluru chicken well” don’t bode well for chickens in general.

Same goes for “Indian Chicken in a Bucket”:
